War Crimes
The biggest controversy of crimes during World War I involves the genocide of approximately 1.5 million people residing in the area of Turkey. According to the government though these people died tragically due to battles taking place that they were caught in the middle of. However, many historians believe the Armenians were deliberately destroyed for their religious and political views.
German soldiers were also accused of deliberately attacking towns were the war was not taking place. They showed no mercy as they invaded theses areas, raping and killing women and children. Records show they are connected to the death and brutalization of at least 1,200 people. They are also responsible for 42,000 more becoming homeless and having to evacuate their residential area.
In addition to these highly publicized World War I war crimes, there have been numerous accounts of prisoners being mistreated. This includes not providing adequate food or water, withholding medical treatment, poor conditions for them to be held in, and beatings. For many soldiers in charge of the prisoners, tormenting them and punishing them was a fun game they engaged in to pass the time.
Many prisoners who escaped or who did get released upon the end of World War I have shared their experiences of what they suffered at the hands of the enemy. The horrific stories of cruelty and punishment are very difficult for them to forget. It is believed the Germans were the cruelest of punishers during the course of World War I. They showed no compassion to anyone who was fighting against them.
