Tips For Setting Up A Small Business

A vast majority of people dream and desire to start their own business at some point, so as to avoid working under the exhausting and draining conditions of the employer- employee relationship throughout their life. Starting a business though is not so easy and it will not flourish overnight. Setting up even a small business is a really time consuming and daunting task, that requires constant monitoring and attention, especially during its first steps, until it gets into a regular operational rhythm.

Starting a small business requires at first the same amount of time and involves the same amount of challenges and risk-taking as a big company but can work relatively fast and start becoming profitable even faster when the right steps are taken, cautiously and carefully. The first and most important part of starting a business is the study of the market and performing research so as to evaluate the market’s needs, the needs of customers as well as their response to a particular niche and their true buying force. Obviously, depending on where you live you have to choose something that will be appealing first of all to your area, since this is going to be your first impression and test in the market. Choosing the best opportunity is vital for the longevity and success of your business, however it always has to be something that is within your area of expertise and interest, otherwise you will not be able to be creative, enhance your business and make functional and effective marketing and operational plans.

Preparing a business plan even before starting the business, is essential, as no matter how small a business is, it needs a strategy that involves budget, marketing, supplies, procurement and financing options. A solid and well-crafted plan can prove extremely helpful even at a secondary level, after the set up of the business, as it can always be a guide and reference point for the future. Moreover, the business plan can help you define the type of business you are going to start, such as, if it is going to be a limited liability company or a partnership. All these administrative and bureaucratic steps are necessary in order to define and start with the right legal entity as well as the appropriate networking chamber.

It is needless to say that every company, especially a small business, needs advertising and marketing. Internet is an absolute must for every small business, so you have to consider from the beginning setting up your website and promoting your service and products online if you want your company to flourish and last for as long as you want it to.

Small Business Ideas For Beginners

Trying to thrive in the middle of a recession can be a really daunting and stressful task, especially if you are a regular employee who wants to make some changes and get rid of the constant fear of losing a job. If you want to start a small business so as to ensure a stable income and change the quality and focus of your life, then here are some ideas for you that can give you a boost even in a downward economy.

If you think of putting up a business from scratch, with a small capital, then trying an online business is always a good idea. You can find something that interests you first of all. There are online businesses that demand some small amount of investment to start with and can be really profitable. Online stores and franchises are a good idea. You can do some research and find out if there are online bookstores that are ready to share their business brand name with you, so that you can both increase your profits and income. Remember that when it comes to businesses that exist only online you avoid a series of extra expenses, such as rent and on site store related taxes and you just have to have a storage room and good suppliers. Moreover, having a small online business gives you unlimited opportunities in marketing, as you can choose the style and type of your marketing campaign, spending more or less money or targeting particular groups and expanding the business to other countries and states. Internet gives you the chance to overcome limitations of time and geography and that can prove really helpful for a small business that seeks some longevity and profit.

If you are not an internet savvy person or just want something different, then starting a consulting service can prove to be a good idea. If you have special knowledge in something and you have good interpersonal skills, then trying to help people giving them advice in the field of your expertise can really help. Consultations – such as interior decoration, wardrobe , beauty consultations if you are a woman, or investment and marketing services, can be very profitable and significantly increase your income especially if you manage to create a good name and work on your reputation a lot. If you have satisfied customers, then they can spread the word for you, which means more customers and more money in the future.

Remember, don’t choose something just because it is trendy if you don’t have any idea or interest in it, because it can lead to a disaster and that, you definitely do not need.

Obtaining A Small Business Grant

When it comes to starting a small business, money can be an issue for some. Trying to get a bank loan can be difficult if your credit is less than perfect. If you are having trouble getting the money to start your business or even if your business is in need of money, you can always try to look into getting a small business grant. Each state has its own loan regulations and rules so it is important for you to do your research.

At this time, there are no small business loans available through the federal government. You would need to look directly to your local state department. It is possible that your local state development agency will actually have a program that will offer small business grants or assistance financially. You have to do your research to see if you qualify for the grant. There is a lot of paperwork that you will need to fill out as well and documentation that you will need to provide in order to find out if you qualify. The type of information that you will need to supply for the application depends on whether you are filing for money to expand your business or if it is to start your business.

On the website for your local state, you will probably find several links that lead to other relevant links to apply for a grant. This is where the research comes in. It is very important to cross your t’s and dot your i’s so that your application can be filled in correctly. If you miss even one thing, your application can get rejected and you will have to start from scratch. This can be very time consuming and it can hold up the process up with a lot of red tape to handle.

As said, it will require a lot of research to get a grant. Although the small business administration does not offer grants, they do offer several different options for loans. It takes a lot of hard work to get a small business grant. If you have a new business it may be even more difficult. You will need to produce data on many different things such as the benefits of your business and potential growth numbers. Make sure that you have all of your ducks in a row before you apply. If you have difficulty trying to find the information online, call your local state department and they will be able to point you in the right direction.

Types of Insurances for Small Businesses

When owning a small business, it is more than mandatory to have some coverage and insurance for your company. It is true that figuring out what you need for your business is really hard. It is most likely that you will need the help of a professional who can help you determine the type of insurance you will need, especially when running a small business, where sometimes the limits and differences among the several types of coverage and insurance are relatively small and hardly distinctive. Let’s have a look at which are the basic types of business insurance.

• Business Property – This is the coverage you can get against the complete loss or any kind of damage to the property or elements of a business.

• Business Liability – This protects a company against customers’ claims that they were harmed in any way by products or services provided by the company.

• Professional Liability – Malpractice insurance for doctors, or Errors and Omissions professionals of the economic field are some of the examples of this kind.

• Business Owners Policy – This is more like a combination of policies and coverage practices including more than one time of coverage.

• Commercial Auto Insurance – This type refers to cars used in the business and resembles the known personal auto insurance policies.

• Workers Compensation – This depends on your business legal entity. Some companies can avoid it .It refers to coverage of workers’ possible injuries and protection against the company.

• Group Health – This refers again to employees more than the company and is about the general health coverage, as a medical plan that employees can join. Small businesses can usually avoid this.

• Group Life – Along with the Group Health this also refers to the employees’ benefits, but in this case the company is also protected like in the case of a sudden loss of an employee or even the owner. This may cover damage and financial loss to the company due to the sudden deprivation of this person’s services.

There are of course many more coverage possibilities when it comes to business insurance types, but in general these are the most commonly considered among small businesses. In any case it is advised to consult with an insurance expert because he is the one to define what you really need and what can meet your requirements in an efficient and cost effective way. The coverage plans can be combined and customized, so it is better to avoid choosing by yourself.

Availing Small Business Loans To Keep Afloat

The Small Business Administration (SBA) in the US, assists small businesses nationwide to meet their financial needs. This program gives lenders the ability to provide short and long term loans to small businesses that do not qualify via regular small business loan channels.

The four basic types of small business loans available are

- The 7(a) Business Loan Guaranty Program

- The 504 Certified Development Company Business Loan

- The Small Business Investment Company Program and

- Small Business Investment Grants.

The 7(a) Basic Business Loan Guaranty Program – This is the primary and most flexible loan program offered to small businesses since the agency can guarantee all financing requirements for several different business needs. The Small Business Administration in guaranteeing the small business loan is assuring a lender that in the event the loan is not repaid, the Small Business Administration will refund the lender for his loss, although the small business owner still owes and remains obligated to repay the full amount back to the SBA. Start-up small businesses can use the proceeds of the 7(a) guaranteed business loan to

a) Renovate and expand start-up facilities

b) Refinance existing debt

c) Purchase equipment and machinery

d) Augment the business working capital and finance the receivables

e) Finance credit lines that are seasonal and

f) Purchase land or construct commercial buildings.

The 7(m) Micro-Loan Program – It is the SBA’s Micro-Loan program which provides up to $35,000 to small businesses and non-profit childcare centers.

The 504 Certified Development Company (CDC) Program – Is a provider of long term, fixed rate loans for such things as buildings and land. The non-profit corporations contribute to the local communities assisting them with their economic development.

Small Business Investment Grants – These are small business loans that put venture capital into small businesses so that they can become modernized. SBIC’s make venture capital investments. This is also good for growth and expansion.

These small business loans not only take care of the Office of Veterans so as to maximize and make available small business loans to veterans, but also make loans available to the Reserve Component Members, disabled veterans and their dependents and survivors.

Some other loans available for small businesses are as follows – Energy and Conservation loans, Pollution control loans, Qualified Employee Trusts Loans, International Trade Loans (ITL), and Export Working Capital Loans (EWCL). All these loans are easy to obtain and very necessary for many small businesses all over the country.
