Sibling Death
Even if the sibling is an infant that the other children haven’t bonded with for very long, they will suffer from the loss. It is very important for the needs of the other children to continually be met during this difficult time. That is often hard for the parents to do when they are struggling with the loss of a child. Having friends, family, and counselors assist with the healing process is very important for the entire family.
In some cases the death of a sibling is the direct result of an action by an individual. In most cases it is accidental but in other instances it is intentional. Common accidents involving death of a sibling include playing with guns, car accidents with one sibling as the driver, and falls off of bikes or motorcycles.
Intentional death of a sibling is becoming increasingly common as the number of children acting in violence increases. During the heat of a fight or other incident one sibling may take action that results in the death of the other. In some cases this is an isolated incident. However, may times it emerges that there was a history of abuse and control by the other sibling and things continued to escalate.
With this type of sibling death, it is even more traumatic for the family. They have to deal with the fact that the death was intentional and not at the hands of the stranger. It can be a long fight through the legal system as well and it can result in the family losing two children instead of just one.
Natural death of a sibling as they get older in age is a part of life, but often one that is difficult to accept. The fact that someone that has spent decades knowing you has passed away is very difficult to accept. For some individuals it is even harder than the death of their parents or their spouse due to the strong bond they have with their sibling.
