Rock Salt
Rock salt has also been found in areas where the water has receded and left open bays. Sometimes it is part of the sediment that is found and can be traced back hundreds of years. There is a significant need for rock salt as it is essential for people to survive. The body needs a certain level of salt for the electrodes to be balanced. It is also used as a preservative in many of the foods we buy packaged at the grocery store.
The largest reserves of rock salt are found in the United States and in Canada. Many of them are several feet thick so we don’t have to worry about running out of salt any time soon. The process of refining rock salt takes place in factories. The impurities are removed so that it can be consumed safely.
Most of the rock salt has to be mined but the process is much safer than mining for coal and ore. Water is generally used to get the rock salt to the entrance of the mine. There it is allowed to evaporate and the salt crystals are left behind. They are then crushed down so that they can be processed. It is a very time consuming process but one that has to be done in order to keep up with the consumer demands for salt.
Rock salt never spoils and it was learned by early civilizations that it could slow down the spoilage of foods as well. Since salt was in such good supply even the poor people were able to get their hands on it. Since the early 20th century it has become a staple in the foods that we consume on a daily basis.
