Duty
In some families, the feelings of duty for the military and to serve the country go back across several generations. They may want to serve their country because they have great pride in it and want to do their part. In many families, the sense of duty comes from how they are raised. They may think it is their duty to help out their siblings and to care for their own parents.
The sense of duty that a person has can change over the course of their life. A young mother may have a sense of duty that her role is to always care for the needs of her children. After they are grown up and have headed out into the world alone, she may take up some other duty she is passionate about. Maybe it will be preventing drunk drivers from being on the streets or helping to establish some support system for the youth in her area.
Those that decide to spend their life serving God and helping others believe that it is their duty or their calling. While we don’t always understand the duties that a person is passionate about, we should strive to respect them. Most people have a sense of duty that extends beyond themselves. They want to be able to assist others either financially or by donating their time. They don’t do this for recognition but for self fulfillment.
People of all ages can have a sense of duty and it should be encouraged. Even children can have a sense of duty to help their parents with chores, to work hard on their academics, or to forge friendships with those less fortunate than they are. It can be hard work to follow the duties that you feel are in your heart but it can also be one of the greatest rewards you will ever experience in your life.
