Pigment is evident in cement and the amount of it will determine the overall color of it. Some people prefer a light silver color while others want a darker gray color. However, you may want your cement to be a different color altogether such as a dusty pink. This is where the various colors of cement pigment come into play.

You don’t want more than 10% of the total ingredients for the cement job to be color pigments. If you do, there is a significant chance that your cement will be very weak. It could crumble under the weight of vehicles. It can also crack which will make it appear to be old and worn out in a very short span of time.

You will find while shopping for cement pigments that some colors are more expensive than others. Black, brown, and red are the least expensive. This is because they are derived from both carbon and iron oxides. The colors of blue and green are more expensive because they come from chromium oxide which is much harder to find.

Before you purchase any type of cement pigment you need to consider what your options are. If you are going for a new color then you will have an easier time. You can mix it all together and then pour the cement. Keep track of how much pigment you add so that you can make it the same way should you need to do so again.

When you are trying to match cement pigment that is already in place, it gets tricky if you don’t know how much you will need to get that same color. The differences in the colors will be very evident once the cement has had time to set and dry. If you can’t be sure how much pigment the cement has then you will be better off doing the entire project instead of just a part of it.

You do need to be very careful when you are using various types of cement pigments. You should wear a respirator to prevent your body from breathing in the toxins. You also want to wear gloves to protect your hands and goggles to protect their eyes.
