Fundraisers
It makes people feel good to donate money or to make a purchase from the many different fundraisers offered. It can make a person feel stretched quite thin at times though because there are always many worthy fundraisers to choose from. It is a good idea to have a set budget for fundraisers that you can offer on a monthly basis. Once you have spent that limit, you won’t commit to any additional donations or purchases until the following month.
It is a good idea to keep track of the various fundraisers you participate in as you can use them as a deduction on your tax returns in some instances. It depends on the specifics of the fundraiser so ask your tax preparer for more information. You also want to be able to contact someone if you don’t get the items you have purchased and paid for from a fundraiser.
Unfortunately, there are a variety of different fundraisers out there that aren’t legitimate. People pretend to be part of an effort to do good and they are really scamming money for themselves. If you are suspicious that a fundraising request isn’t’ legitimate, as the people who are responsible for operating it. If you find it isn’t legitimate contact your local law enforcement agency immediately. Hopefully they can provide public awareness with a local radio station or your local newspaper to let people know about it.
There are serious repercussions for misrepresenting an organization and a fundraiser in order to generate money for your own purposes. The law works hard to prosecute such individuals to the full extent of the laws in that area. This is to deter such activities from happening in the future. Fraudulent fundraising activities prevent real organizations from being able to generate the income they really need to thrive.
