Horseshoe Pits
If you want to be able to practice or to play horseshoes at home you can easily make your own pits. This is a great activity to enjoy with your family or with friends when you host a barbeque or other gathering. You can even host a gathering to get others to assist you with making the horseshoe pits.
You will need to make a frame for the horseshoe pit from wood or from metal. You want the height of the pit to be 48” and the width to be 36”. You will need to create two frames that are identical to each other.
Carefully decide where you in your that you want the horseshoe pits to be located. You want them to be easily accessible but you also don’t want to trip over the metal bar that will be sticking out approximately 15” each time you walk around in your backyard. While playing horseshoes is fun it can be dangerous so place the pit in a location where it is least likely to pose a threat to anyone else who happens to be enjoying the yard. Don’t place it next to the lawn chairs or the barbeque grill!
It is important to dig your hole for the frames of the pits very deep because you want to be able to fill it with several inches of sand. Over time you will need to add more sand to it due to the wind and some of it getting kicked around. The materials to build a horseshoe pit are very inexpensive.
You will be able to complete the project in only a couple of hours. Make sure you take the time to double check your measurements though as you want them to appear uniform and proportional to the rules of the game for horseshoes.
