Afterlife
The biggest concepts about an afterlife involve the idea that people will go to either Heaven or Hell. It depends on the choices they make on Earth as to where they will end up. Even those that have done terrible things in their life can be forgiven by a higher power if they do the right thing and accept Christ into their hearts.
There are people out there that don't place a whole lot of stock in Heaven or Hell though. They do believe in a type of spiritual transformation though. This often encompasses the ideals of reincarnation. This is the process of coming back to Earth in another form as another person or animal. Some people claim to have strong memories of a past life they were a part of.
There are those that do not believe in any type of afterlife. This doesn't mean they are mean people though. Some of the most caring and compassionate people that die have no religious affiliation. They believe when your life is over you are done forever and all that lives on is what you will be remembered for. They often have a strong preference about being either buried for cremated as that will be their last place to lay.
The ceremonies to honor the life of a person often reflect their afterlife beliefs. For those that don't believe in something afterwards the celebration is focused on the good things in their life. It is to give people time to reflect and store their own good memories with that person.
For those that do believe in an afterlife, people mourning for them can find comfort in knowing that they may be in a much better place. Sometimes it leads you to wonder is the afterlife information we have isn't for the living to cope more than it is for the dead to embrace.
