People have been outraged by the events that have taken place and they have pressured their governments to take actions. It is refreshing to know that the victims of such hate crimes have been able to turn their status into something that can help other people.
There are several categories that the laws for hate crimes fall into. The laws have to define what a hate crime is so that it can be identified as a motive in the acts that took place. The penalties for such crimes should be clearly defined as well. Many of these laws are developed so that civil action can take place in a court of law that covers the issue of a hate crime. There are also laws that require various statistics relating to hate crimes to be collected and offered to the public.
In the United States, hate crimes can be pursued under federal law. Most hate crimes are referred to the FBI for further analysis. The strict laws in place are also to send a message that it won’t be tolerated. There are deep emotional scars for victims of hate crimes and for their families. Even if they recover physically from the crimes or that monetary damages are paid for the emotional part of it can take years to heal and in many cases it never fully does.
The laws of hate crimes should apply to the very law enforcement agencies that are to uphold them. Some issues have become a political arena for such arguments. Some believe the beating of black individuals during riots or arrest attempts by white officers is a hate crime. Others feel that the color of the person would not change the efforts of the police in regards to the matter.
