Locusts
Locusts are often confused with simple grasshoppers because they look so similar to each other. The main differences is the fact that locusts go through periods of extremely aggressive behaviors. This is when these small insects become very destructive and dangerous.
There are several species of locusts that are at risk of becoming extinct though due to poor conditions for them to live in. They won’t reproduce if they aren’t in good living conditions. In the United States the Rocky Mountain locusts have already become extinct due to changes in the climate and the atmosphere. The Rocky Mountain locusts were producing fewer eggs and then eventually stopped laying them at all.
Locusts have been linked to various plagues that have taken place over time. They are referred to in the Bible as the carrier of the 8th plague in Egypt. Some people view their swarming behaviors as evil because of the Bible references and due to the amount of destruction they can cause.
In 1915 a locust plague in Palestine destroyed almost all of the vegetation in the area. In 2004 Africa was attacked by what was thought to be the largest swarm of locusts ever seen. They destroyed the crops in they are and as a result some parts of Africa are still trying to recover from it. The risk of a plague was very high due to the number of locusts in this particular attack. It is believed more than 69 million of them were part of the invasion.
With the information we now have about locust plagues though pest control efforts were able to be put into place. The cost was more then $2 million but it prevented even more damage to Africa from taking place. Any time you have a swarm of locusts attacking an area though it is considered to be a natural disaster.
