National Grandparents Day
The idea for National Grandparents day was introduced in 1978 and immediately accepted by the President of the United States, Jimmy Carter. The idea was to set aside a day to honor the elderly and to listen to the tales they have to share of early history that could continue to be passed on to future generations. This annual event is celebrated on the first Sunday of September.
This is a great day to celebrate with your entire family. Many families gather for Labor Day which is very close to it so you can include a Grandparents Day celebration along with it. They will love the additional attention you are giving them and it is a great way to honor them for the important role they have had in your lives.
You can choose to celebrate grandparent’s day with a great gift or a fun activity. One that can be fun and will always be cherished is to make a video of the grandparents with all of their children and grandchildren. The video can also capture the grandparents sharing stories about their life that everyone will want to remember.
You can also gather your family to do some nice things for the grandparents. Help them get their home ready for the upcoming winter by putting on storm windows and chopping firewood. You can wash windows, dust, check the roof, and change the filters in the furnace. All of these efforts will be greatly appreciated by the grandparents.
If you think you have the very best grandparents, you can nominate them for the grandparents of the year award on the official website for National Grandparents Day. There are winners chosen for each state as well as an overall winner. This is a great way to honor your grandparents and to share with the whole world just how wonderful they are.
