The Great Apes
The amount of intelligence that the Great Apes have shown definitely make them worth studying. However, this has lead to illegal experiments and research programs taking place. These Great Apes are injected with cancer cells and other deadly diseases in order to experiment with drugs to resolve them. The fact that gorillas are so close in DNA make up to humans makes them a prime target for such studies.
The numbers of Great Apes continues to dwindle, and none of them reproduce quickly. The feat that the Great Apes will one day be extinct has lead to them being placed in zoos for protection and laws being put into place to prevent them from being hunted. Still, these acts continue and many Great Apes die from various viruses and diseases that occur in their natural habitat.
In 1993 the Great Ape Project was implemented in order to ensure the rights of Great Apes are being protected. This organization consists of animal rights leaders, scientists, researchers, psychologists, and experts in the field of primate behaviors. They are also dedicated to eliminating the use of Great Apes for research purposes. Under the Declaration of the Great Apes they are to have protection that includes the right to live, individual liberties, and not be subjected to cruel treatment or torture.
There are plenty of ways in which people can fight to save the Great Apes. Make sure you don’t support any products that use them for research purposes. Many cosmetic companies use Great Apes for their products as well and you should stop buying from them. Make sure you find out about any plans the government in your country has in place for destroying the natural environment these Great Apes live in. Protecting them now means they will have a chance of surviving on this Earth but if things continue as they have been the Great Apes will one day be extinct.
