Gluten Free Alcohol
Experts estimate that there are around 3 million people who suffer from Celiac's disease, the condition that makes digestion and absorption of gluten into the body impossible. That is potentially quite a market for things like gluten free beer. Other people have wheat or other grain allergies that prevent them from enjoying their favorite beers.
So how do you make beer without gluten, you ask? There are a variety of ingredients that are used. The grains used in normal beers are essentially just there for the yeast to have something to feed on. The yeast feeds on the sugars in the grains. Therefore, if one wants beer but with no gluten, one simply replaces the grain with another form of sugar for the yeast to eat. One such form of sugar could be sorghum, honey, molasses, or a host of various choices.
Where can you find such beer? Well, so far, the major brands of beer manufacturers have yet to produce a gluten free offering. But there are smaller craft breweries that make gluten free beer, and some even specialize in it. Ask at your local liquor store or bottle shop about gluten free alcohol options.
Not a beer drinker? You're in luck! Most other alcoholic offerings tend to be gluten free. Of course, check with the label, but most wines, vodkas, rums, tequilas, and other alcoholic beverages are not made with grains or other forms of gluten and are therefore safe for gluten free consumption.
Whatever your choice, rest assured that there are options out there for enjoyment of gluten free alcoholic beverages. And the choices seem to be growing by the day!
