Tree Frogs
From their name you would expect tree frogs to be perched all over the branches in various types of environments. However, they are much like other species of frogs in the fact that they need to stay close to the water. They need to be able to lay their eggs in this type of environment in order for them to survive. This is because baby frogs don’t have legs to survive on land. They are known as tadpoles and their legs won’t develop until they mature.
Tree frogs are often a very different color of green than what you may be used to with most species of frogs. They tend to be a light color of green, and many of them are almost neon green as the shade. They also tend to feature red eyes which can make them appear to be fierce but they aren’t.
Their red eye color can help to save them from predators though. They are often able to blend in with the grass due to their green color. However, if a predator does approach them the red eyes are a natural type of defense mechanism. Most of them feature red legs too. When they run from predators this flash of red color is quite confusing and even intimidating to them.
It is due to this unique combination of skin color and eye color that so many people like to have tree frogs as pets. They tend to do very well in captivity as long as they have plenty of water and fresh food. Tree frogs tend to eat a very good diet of small insects. They can often find large supplies of ants, spiders, beetles, and even grasshoppers in some their natural environment. If you have a tree frog for a pet you should offer these types of life food items.
Most tree frogs are nocturnal which means they move around at night and they sleep during the day. This can make them very boring pets though as they will want to sleep while you are awake. You may find it difficult when you are trying to sleep listening to them eat and splash around in the water.
