Free Background Checks
Background check is now available as a service either through a private commercial institution or through government agencies. Mostly, it is a paid service although government agencies may only require minimal processing fees. Background checks do come at a price and you may be asked to pay for processing fees, database access, time spent and other fees .It all depends on what kind of background check you want done.
If you search for the term ‘background check ‘on the internet you may come across listings offering free background checks. However, most are scams trying to lure you into signing up for their services. Most will allow you to type information for the subject of your background check and the results will only say “available”. You are then asked to register and pay for detailed reports. Sometimes, even the “available” message is misleading for after you register and have paid already, the results may just bear a slim relevance to the result you really want.
In the end, the free background check is not really free at all. You may also stumble in on some promotions which say “pay a basic fee and you get all information such as driving records, consumer reports, etc” when all you want is just an employment record.
There might be some truth in that advertising although sometimes the data you really want to find out is missing. For example, you are maybe looking for a driving record for your driver applicant. You found a site that says driving records plus others. If the driver came from California, you will never get driving records except from the DMV of California but you may be able to access his past employment records and other stuff like his consumer reports which you don’t really need.
The most you can get for a free background report are those that come from government agencies like driving records or criminal records. You invariably have to pay at least a few dollars to get some reasonably relevant information. This fee usually goes for maintenance expense of the website and not as a service fee as compared to a private background check provider.
To sum up, free background checks are only available if what you are searching for has public relevance. Otherwise you need to pay and get permission in order to get a background check on anyone for specific information.
