Etiquette
In your own home, you can make up your own rules for etiquette and they are often more lax than what you will find in society. For example some people allow everyone to take off their shoes when they enter their home if they want to. Other people feel it is disrespectful to get so comfortable in someone else’s home though.
There are several different ways in which etiquette is learned. For those that come from a family with a great deal of money, etiquette schools are often something their children are expected to attend. These days it is just as common for boys as it is for girls. The etiquette training programs are part of their school curriculum as well. You may think it is silly to take complete courses in etiquette, but if you will be in a position in society where people watch your every move it is very important.
Basic etiquette can be taught by other people in the family as well. For example which fork to use at a meal and how to place your napkin are all in house things that children learn by example. Perhaps your mother engages in weekly tea parties and takes you along on occasion so you can learn about the etiquette of the experience. As an adult you will be expected to follow them when you are attending them on your own.
You can also hire an etiquette consultant to help you out. Many people do this for particular occasions. For example, if you are hosting an elaborate wedding you don’t want to offend anyone. Following the proper etiquette rules is a big part of making sure this happens. The consultant will help to ensure everything goes as it should in this department.
