American Fencing League

The American Fencing League is a non-profit organization that sponsors various fencing competitions for people to participate in. Known as the AFL, this organization was established in 2005. The goal of this organization is to help clarify rules that are to be used in their sponsored competitions. They also offer divisional events so that the best competitors in fencing can challenge each other.

They also assist with helping establish training programs for those wishing to teach the elements of fencing. Students can find out if their instructor is qualified by contacting the AFL. Their rules allow all three of the traditional weapons for fencing to be used including the sabre, foil, and epee.

They do not allow for the electrical device options of any of these weapons to be used in competition. This fact does lead to some controversy when it comes to scoring though. A panel of judges are used to determine the points rather than relying on an electrical system.

Many people find the rules of the AFL to offer a more competitive match that relies on skills and agility. The cost of the equipment to be used in the competitions offered by the AFL are also less expensive. This is important because sometimes the cost of the equipment can prevent individuals from being able to compete.

It is important for anyone who is considering being a part of the United States Olympic team to understand that the rules of the AFL aren’t those that will be used for such competitions. There are several different classifications for competition under the guidelines of the AFL.

The prep category is reserved for those who are in the first season of competition. If they place in the top three of any competition then they will be moved to the classification of novice. Once they place first in this category they will be moved to the juniors. They will move up to intermediate upon placing in a national event.

The highest level of competition for fencing in the AFL is the senior level. A person can stay at any level for any length of time for them to achieve the requirements to move up. There is no process for being reversed in the rankings.
