Licensed Novels
Licensed novels are usually copyrighted their owners. They are original works of different authors who own complete copyright to their works. These novels may be then picked up by TV serial producers or film makers to produce a real time projection of their work in the form of drama or movie.
These works are officially licensed and belong to the author of the novel. Their basic plot is authorized by the actual owner for republishing or reprinting for commercial use. For example, when a movie produced approaches a book writer for making a movie based on the plot used in the novel written by the author. Similarly, if the book is written in one language, the publisher or another needs to obtain permission from the original author to print it in another language.
The best citations of some of the novels written and then converted in to digital media are Star Wars, the Aliens trilogy, and Harry Potter. Although the basic plot remains the same, the producers have made changes as per the requirement of the media. Thus, these works can also be categorized as the works of fan fiction but they are largely based on the main plot with all the characters and the main storyline intact as in the original novel.
When TV producers or movie makers seek permission from the novelist for their rights to publish their works in TV or movies, original authors are paid hefty remunerations that can be compared to the royalty received by the publisher. Thus, good novels not only earn good revenues for the author in the print medial but also from the digital media.
