Dumbwaiters and elevators certainly have offered us a very convenient method of moving goods over the years. A dumbwaiter is often found in a restaurant setting. Some very large homes also have them for the housekeepers to use to move items without having to carry them up and down the stairs. This is basically a very small sized elevator that is designed for items and not for people.

Since it can be dangerous to carry various types of items up and down the stairs, a dumbwaiter makes the process much easier. It also results in less strain on the back or legs when heavy items are being dealt with. For a fast paced business, this is a great solution to keeping things moving. If you need an item that is downstairs it can be placed in the mechanism and quickly received by someone waiting for it above.

Elevators are used for all types of purposes. The trend in our society has been to build up to allow more room. This makes sense as apartment buildings and businesses can be several stories tall. They would take up too much room if they were only one floor. Most elevators are designed to allow the transport of people. There are code requirements as well as a limit on the number of people that can ride in them.

Public locations have to offer special types of lifts and elevators for those with a handicap to access. They may be able to just use the same one as everyone else as long as certain requirements are met. For example the elevator has to be large enough for a wheelchair to fit. The buttons also have to be low enough for a person to reach while in a wheelchair.

Some individuals have elevators in their homes. This isn’t very common in a basic home, but for those in elaborate mansions it is possible. It may also allow someone with a disability access to various levels of their home. Some elevators are designed for freight. This allows heavy items to be moved with ease rather than up flights of stairs. Elevators and dumbwaiters should never be used in the event of a fire. Weight capacity also needs to be strictly followed.
