DIY Electrical Installation
One common DIY electrical installation project is adding a ceiling fan into the living room or the bedroom. If you have an existing light fixture in the room, you can work with the box that is already there. If you don't have an existing box in the ceiling of the room, you're going to have to figure out where you want the fixture to be hanging in the room and poke a small screwdriver hole into the ceiling. Tilt the screwdriver as far as you can and spin it in that hole to make sure there are no studs in the area in which you will be adding your ceiling fan fixture.
If it's a good location, get a three and five eighths inch hole saw and cut a perfect hole into the ceiling. Next you will have to crawl up into the attic and take a hammer or screw gun and the box you're going to be using and some screws and a two by four. Mount the box to your stud and set it into the hole between two roof trusses. Then run screws into each truss and into your box backing stud. Then run a wire into it. On your way out of the attic, swing by the top of the wall that you want your switch to be in and drill a hole straight down. Shove the wire down the hole. Get out of the attic and go to whatever stud bay you pushed your wire down the wall and cut out a cut-in-box-size opening, stab your wires into your new box, stick the box into the wall, swing out the ears, and install the switch. Make sure to consult a professional before turning it on.
