Nightmares
Any type of dream that causes a person to have an emotion that is difficult to deal with can be classified as a nightmare. For example dreaming that someone you know has died can be a nightmare. It is definitely going to fill you with emotions that you are going to have hard time shaking off.
In many instances, the person having the nightmare is involved in what is taking place though. They may be trapped, buried alive, drowning, or falling. All of these types of scenarios case the person to wake up with a sense of fear surrounding them. It isn’t uncommon for people to wake up screaming or sweating from a nightmare due to the amount of emotion that is taking place for the body.
For most people, nightmares result from some type of traumatic experience. Sometimes they are aware of what it was such as an accident or being raped. Other times though they can’t seem to find a link to the cause of the nightmares. Children often have a hard time distinguishing reality from fiction so even scary movies can cause them to experience nightmares.
Generally a person is able to recall all of the main points of a nightmare. Have your child tell you what was taking place. This will help you to understand their fears as well as to remove any triggers that could be responsible for the episodes.
If the nightmares are taking place on a regular basis then it is a good idea to seek professional counseling. They can help a person work through the situation to help it pass. Too many people self medicate by trying to stay up all night, taking sleeping pills, and even using alcohol. These methods aren’t recommended as they are going to result in more problems developing that can affect your overall health.
