Free Dictionaries
Your local library likely has several dictionaries that you can use free of charge. You will have to find out the rules though as most libraries don’t allow such reference materials to be checked out. This means you are going to have to set your schedule so that you can use it during the hours they are open.
If you are attending school, many classrooms have free dictionaries that students can use. Again, the teachers may have rules that you can only use them in the classroom so make sure you find out. You may have to ask for permission to come in before or after school if you need to use the dictionary and it can’t be taken home.
Sometimes libraries or schools will give away older versions of dictionaries. While they will be slightly outdated they can still be very useful resources. You may want to inquire about this. They can put your name on a list and then contact you when such a dictionary becomes available.
The internet is the best resource for free dictionaries though if you have access. Most businesses and homes have computers with internet access so this shouldn’t be too hard. You can type in the word you are looking for so it is faster than looking it up in a hard copy dictionary. Some of them will even pronounce the words for you so you can hear them correctly.
One advantage of a free online dictionary is that it will be continually updated. This means you will always have access to the information you need. It will also be current so you are sure to be able to stay on top of things. For those that use a dictionary as a resource, this type of information can serve many purposes.
