Headgear
If the orthodontist does recommend headgear, it is very important that the instructions are followed carefully. Children need to refrain from swimming or engaging in various types of sports if they need to wear headgear during the day. There is too high of a risk that they can get injured from it.
Many people that have to wear orthodontic headgear worry about getting teased. Unfortunately there isn’t much that can be done about it. Hopefully the individual is able to stay positive and has some good friends supporting them through it. For those types of dental needs that are severe, the headgear has to be worn 16 hours a day so you may be able to get them through school without it as long as they agree to wear it the remainder of the time without exception.
Before you aggress to dental headgear, it is a good idea to get another opinion. Most orthodontists offer free consultations so you can do this without spending any money. Find out if there are safe and effective alternatives to using the headgear. You may find out a particular orthodontist simply prefers that type of treatment. In that type of scenario you may want to take your business elsewhere.
The cost of orthodontic headgear is expensive as well. You are better off investing the money in other aspects of the treatment if you can get away with it. For adults that have been injured in sports or a vehicle accident, headgear may be required to ensure that the teeth and jaw are able to come into alignment with each other. This type of treatment is rare but may be necessary for a full recovery to be possible.
