Dancing Shoes
The most important accessory for any type of dancer is something that most of us probably take for granted: the shoe. Non-dancers can choose shoes solely based on their appearance, if they so wish. For dancers, the decision is much more critical. They must choose carefully to ensure that they are able to not only execute their dance to near-perfection, but that they are also constructed to deter an injury.
One of the first things to consider when looking for a dance shoe is that it must actually be a shoe made for dance. Since dancing is so physically demanding, the shoe must not add to those demands. It should be constructed of a light-weight material such as split leather. Split leather has the advantage of being flexible, allowing the dancer to move around with ease and improved control.
The disadvantage of using split leather is that since it is not a heavy-weight leather, it isn't able to endure harsh conditions such as rough pavement or the elements. Another thing to consider is the type of sole. The sole needs to be thin, provide the proper amount of slip, and be flexible. Suede leather is a good choice as it is very thin, very flexible and has an ideal amount of slip for most dancers. Smooth leather soles are ideal for seasoned, controlled dancers as they tend to slip more than other alternatives.
Perhaps the best all-around material for the sole of a dance shoe is a synthetic, thin resin. Resin soles can be worn on a variety of different surfaces, either indoor or outdoor, and provide an ideal amount of slip. One of the last considerations for a dance shoe is the interior of the shoe. The insole of the shoe needs to be well-padded so that it can absorb the shock of dance moves, which will reduce injury and fatigue.
Also, it is a good idea to make sure the toe area has more room than conventional shoes as the extra area will eliminate pressure on the foot. The purchase of a dance shoe is an investment-- an investment in you. And the dividend it provides will be the happy feet of a happy dancer.
