Gumby
The episodes with Gumby also featured his red horse named Pokey. Over the course of 35 years, the animated Gumby and Pokey were able to sing, dance, and teach valuable lessons. For example Gumby often stepped into books and then the story unfolded with him interacting with the characters and being a part of the story.
More than 200 episodes were made and re-runs can often be found on various cartoon channels. Since each second of a claymation film required 10-12 frames, the amount of time it took to produce each segment was unbelievable. The scenery had to be created too as well as Gumby and Pokey in various positions to make it appear that they were moving during the course of the program.
One Gumby feature film was released in 1995. It did very well with viewers and critics. The movie was aimed at having some fun with various types of scientific movies that were popular at the time including Star Wars and Terminator. A second movie is in the works and should be out in 2009 or early 2010. Today you can watch all of the Gumby episodes in their entirety on the video site YouTube.
Even though Gumby is no longer in production, it is still one of the most beloved claymation works ever made. There are a few Gumby video games out now and there is a rumor that a comic book could soon be on the way as well. Gumby characters are considered to be collector’s items and you will still find those that got green plasticine and attempted to make their own Gumby characters from it.
