Cheesemaking Supplies

Many people these days are finding a renewed interest in the lost and ancient art of cheesemaking. If you live on a farm and raise livestock, cheesemaking can be a great way of using extra milk and dairy products that you have from your cows, sheep, or goats. Cheesemaking takes a little bit of extra work, and there is a learning curve. But if you are interested in doing some cheesemaking yourself, there are a few supplies that you will need in order to get started making delicious and wonderfully unique cheeses in your own kitchen or barn.

In order to make the cheese, the first category of cheesemaking supplies that you will need will be ingredients that go in the cheese itself. These will include rennet, which helps the cheese to set, various bacteria and cultures, which will help to form different types of cheese and which will affect the flavor, and other cheese additives such as calcium chloride.

Once you have all of the ingredients that will go into the cheese, you will need to get outfitted with some other cheesemaking supplies that will enable you to make quality cheese and will make your life easier while doing so. One of the main cheesemaking supplies in this category that you will need will be cheese cloth. Cheese cloth helps you to drain the curds after they have formed. You also often wrap the cheeses as they dry in the cheese cloth. Cheese cloth has just the right number and size of holes as to be perfect for this task.

Other cheesemaking supplies that you may need will be a drying board. This is where you will set the cheese as it dries, and it is often a bamboo-like mat that will allow the air to circulate under the cheese even as it sits on the table. You will also need to acquire cheese molds that will allow you to shape the curds into cheese. After the cheese is in the mold, you may find that you need a cheese press. This is a device that you can make or buy that will allow you to apply the correct amount of pressure to the cheese for the required amount of time. This will change the hardness and consistency and ultimately the taste of the cheese you are trying to make.
