Comcast Cable
Comcast decided things were going well and they were ready to expand. With the purchase of Storer Communications in 1988 Comcast now had over 2 million customers and became the fifth largest cable company. As if that wasn’t good enough, Comcast make another huge buy out in 1992. With the purchase of AMCELL, Comcast grew to 7 million subscribers.
To target the sports fans out there, Comcast introduced Comcast Spectator in 1996. This became a regional sports center outlet. Bill Gates of Microsoft saw the benefits of Comcast in 1997 with the decision to invest $1 million in the company. With this investment money, Comcast purchased 40% of E! Entertainment in a joint venture with Disney.
Comcast continued to buy out smaller cable companies throughout the next several years. In 2002 Comcast developed a very prosperous network called G4. This network offered entertainment, news, and information about the video game industry. This was done in a joint effort with AT&T, resulting in service to 21 million video game consumers in 41 states.
During all of these new adventures and transitions, Comcast has remained a vital part of the cable industry. Consumers all over the country are very happy with the service and programming they offer. Comcast was named Operator of the Year in 2003. Their CEO, Brian Roberts, was named America’s Best CEO in 2004. Throughout their career, Comcast has been recognized in the cable industry with numerous other awards as well.
What does the future hold for Comcast? While that is unknown at the present time, you can bet that there is plenty of future activity in the works. Comcast is well known as being a quality cable provider and many consumers stay with them for a very long time. Not only do they provide outstanding programming, but a variety of it to meet the likes of various age groups. They also offer very competitive rates on their cable services.
