Breastfeeding Twins
Some mother’s train their twins to feed at the same time from an early age. This means feedings won’t be an all day event from one to the other. They also switch the babies at regular intervals to the other breast. Other mothers of twins argue that breastfeeding should be an individual experience for the mother and the child to bond.
The diet of the mother is essential for the quality of the milk to be the best it can be. Mother’s breastfeeding twins may need to consume up to 2,800 calories a day in order to produce enough milk for them both to get the nutrients that they need. The issue of nipples becoming inflamed or sore due to the constant feedings is common and your doctor will likely recommend soaking them in warm water several times a day.
It is very important for mothers that are nursing twins to keep a good eye on how much each baby is eating. While they may both appear to be eating because your milk supply is going down, one may be eating a great deal and the other very little. Try to write down how long each baby nurses at a given feeding. While it is normal for one to eat more than the other you should contact your doctor if you notice huge differences.
Most mothers who are nursing twins find they are extremely thirsty all day long. Drinking a gallon of water or more each day may be necessary in order to stay hydrated. The additional thirst is often due to the increase of oxytocin that the body produces along with the breast milk.
The decision to breastfeed your twins or not is an individual one. Some women really enjoy the experience while others are too overwhelmed by having two new babies to care for to do it on their own. If you decide not to breastfeed then that is your own personal choice and you shouldn’t let anyone make you feel uncomfortable about it.
