Nonverbal Communication
Sign languages and writing are largely understood as forms of verbal communication because they both use words but nonverbal communication may permeate these as well. The first scientific study of nonverbal communication was Charles Darwin’s book The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals in which he argued that all mammals show emotion reliably in their faces, therefore facial expression are a legitimate form of nonverbal communication and it is universal among all men and mammals.
Much of nonverbal communication is based on random symbols that are culture specific and differ from one culture to another. There is also, however, a large proportion of nonverbal communication that may be universally understood and according to Paul Ekman’s significant studies of facial expressions in the 1960s prove that anger, disgust, fear, joy, sadness and surprise are all universal.
Nonverbal communication is a vast and far-reaching means of communication that has been subdivided by a multitude of scientists and researchers: Object communication is associated with such items as clothing, shoes, jewelry. Proxemics is the study of people’s use and perception of the physical space around them, and is presumed to relate to animal territoriality.
Haptics is the study of touching such as handshakes, nonsexual kissing, high-five, and pats on the shoulder. Chronemics is the study of the use of time and time perception. Oculesics is the study of the role of eyes such as eye contact. Paralanguage is the study of acoustic properties of speech such as tone, pitch, and accent. Kinesics is the study of body movements, facial expressions and gestures.
Non-verbal communication is found in our every day relationships. Just by observing how too people interact with each other, you can get an idea of how it is. Partners that have a loving and caring relationship towards each other will often touch and look directly at each other. If there is tension in the relationship, a lack of non-verbal communication is often very evident.
