Platelets
Bleeding is the result of blood vessels in the body being damaged. The platelets form to create a clot so as little blood is lost from the blood vessels as possible. They are very sticky, almost like a gel, and they allow the blood to clot quickly to prevent the body from losing too much blood.
Platelets start forming clots the second they are exposed to air. As the various elements of the platelets start to break down into the body, a scab is formed. This is a protective covering that prevents the area from being exposed to the risk of infection while it continues to heal.
This is a natural occurrence in the body for most people, but not everyone has enough platelets produced in their body for this to happen as it should. If a person doesn’t have sufficient Vitamin K or calcium in their body, it can take much longer for the blood clot to form.
Your blood can be tested in a lab to determine how many platelets you have. Most people have at least 150,000 platelets in their blood at any given time. Extremely healthy individuals may have as many as 400,000. There are a variety of different medications available that can help to increase the amount of platelets in the blood. Most of them have to be taken on a daily basis. Changing your diet so you can get the amount of Vitamin K and calcium you need is also important.
Those individuals what severe platelet deficiencies may benefit from having additional ones injected into their body. This is often done by placing an IV bag of them in place and having them administered through a tube. This is a very successful treatment for those with a serious platelet deficiency. This process will have to be done several times each month in order for the person to maintain healthy platelet levels.
