Strawberry Birthmarks
For a small percentage of children though these strawberry birthmarks are thick masses that will require the attention of a professional in this area of treatment. If the strawberry birthmark is close to the child’s eye it can create vision problems for them as well. The doctor will also check to make sure the child is able to breathe and eat normally due to the location of the strawberry birthmark.
The size and shape of a strawberry birthmark may grow as the child gets older. By the time the child is about 7 years of age the birthmark should be as big as it will be. Other children may be born with a strawberry birthmark but it gets smaller or disappears altogether as they get older. The skin may be prefect underneath or a small scar may linger in the area.
Most strawberry birthmarks appear on the face but they can be found in any location on the body. They occur in 1 in 20 births but people often think they are more common just because they do appear in the locations where they are visible most of the time. Most children don’t seem to have too much of a self esteem issue with strawberry birthmarks because they are so small and they are quite common in our society.
The child’s doctor will be able to determine what type of birthmark your child has and if it merits further attention. If the strawberry birthmark bothers the child due to the location you can explore the options for having it removed. Otherwise you should keep an eye on the birthmark. If you notice it is growing rapidly or that it is changing colors you should schedule an appointment to get it looked at.
