BBB Criticisms
The Better Business Bureau or BBB as it is called for short is an organization that is designed to help encourage companies to engage in good business practices. This means that no matter what kind of business you have, if you conduct yourself with dignity and respect you will for the most part be safe from getting in trouble with the BBB. Criticisms against the group, however, are not uncommon.
The main reason why BBB criticisms exist is because once a complaint is filed against you or your company, it can damage your business. If you have a large business, your customer base will be big enough that one report likely will not hurt. But the fat that a report was filed can wreak havoc on the customer base from a small company even if the claims are not justified. This means that the system that is designed to help people could actually hurt them. One thing that makes this system difficult at times is that once a complaint is filed it goes on record. There is a dispute resolution process that you can go through, but despite that, the complaint itself can hurt.
Critics of the BBB think that they should change their policy slightly. It would make things a lot easier for small businesses if complaints themselves were not made public, only problems where the company was found at fault should be made public. That way, people who are just trying to stay afloat will not be harmed from one complaint.
But one thing that can really be helpful is if consumers themselves take what the BBB has to say with a grain of salt. This means that if a company you do business with ends up on trhe beware list at the BBB read both sides of the story and gather the facts before you decide if the situation affects you or not. Some people cannot be pleased no matter how hard a business tries. For whatever reason they are bitter. Your job is to determine if the company is at fault and if it is a big deal or not. It is a bad idea to make decisions about whether you will do business with a company or not based on one complaint. The issue could have nothing to do with you.
