Polar Bears
They are very patient animals and very fast with their claws. They will sit for hours waiting for seals to approach air holes and then dive for the kill. They will also grab trout out of the running water in a second. Polar bears are quite large but they are also very good swimmers. They will go into the water to chase down a meal if they have to, but prefer to get it with only their paws due to the cold temperatures.
There is a significant weight difference among the male and female polar bears. A full grown male weighs approximately 1,300 pounds while a full grown female is only around 600 pounds. Many people mistake female polar bears as younger bears because they don’t realize they don’t get as large as the males.
Only the female polar bears hibernate in the winter and this is generally due to the fact that they are pregnant. They males continue to forage for food during the long, cold winter months. Male polar bears become quite aggressive during this time of the year due to a lack of food, the cold, and even the absence of the female polar bears.
Polar bears are known to be the most aggressive types of bears, yet you rarely here about them attacking people. This is because they don’t often live in areas where people are competing for the same land like the case is with other types of bears. Many polar bears are hunted for trophies and for their beautiful fur. The effects of global warming have also lead to a decrease of polar bears in their natural habitat. You will find many of them in captivity in various zoos around the world.
