John Glenn
John Glenn is well known for his role as an astronaut for NASA. He is credited as the third individual from the United States to go into space. His is also credited as the first person from the United States to orbit the Earth in 1961. Glenn is also credited as being the oldest individual in space. In 1998 he had the honor of being onboard again at the age of 77.
Before being part of the space program, Glenn had a long history serving in the military. He enlisted in the navy in 1941 at the age of 20. In 1943 he signed up for the marines corps. He flew fighter jets during combat. In 1957 Glenn went on to be part of the testing for planes. This was a risky job but one that he readily accepted the challenge of.
Glenn was accepted in the NASA program in 1959. He was one of the original members of this program. He was inducted into the Astronaut Hall of Fame in 1990. There are rumors that Glenn was forced out of NASA instead of retiring. This was due to the foundation wanting to have him out in public as a hero of the space program. NASA claims these allegations are unfounded.
Glenn retired from both the military and from NASA in 1965. He successfully served in the role as Senator from 1974 until 1999. This was a decision greatly influenced by his relationship with President Kennedy. He also wanted to run as the Vice President for Jimmy Carter in 1976 but Carter choose someone else as his running mate.
In 1998 Glenn decided he would not run for re-election so he could enjoy some time to himself. However, he continues to be involved in various types of public service work. Education is one area where he dedicates a great deal of his time. Glenn is still married to his childhood sweetheart, Anna Castor. They have two children.
