Adolescent Depression

Depression is a very common type of mental health issue in our society. While there is still a great deal we don’t know about it, we have learned that people of all ages can suffer from it. Many adolescents go through behavior changes due to what is going on with their life and their changing bodies. However, this can be something that is overlooked as parents chalk it up to normal behavior for someone that age.

This doesn’t mean that their parents aren’t tuned into what is going on. However, the symptoms of depression for adolescents can be parallel with what is normal behaviors. For example, it isn’t uncommon for teenagers to be isolated at home. They want their space and they retreat to their room. Isolating yourself from others is also a sign of depression for adults. The parents may not realize that the child has also isolated themselves from their peers though.

A lack of motivation is a very important sign of depression for parents to recognize. Adolescents may stop taking an interest in what once they were passionate about. However, it isn’t unusual for the hobbies and interests of a child to change during adolescence. The have the opportunity to explore new territories and they may be outgrowing some of the other things they used to spend their time on.

Left untreated, adolescent depression can lead to suicide. The number of people in this age group that have attempted or committed suicide has continued to grow in the past decade. Many researchers believe it is because the symptoms of adolescent depression don’t get recognized or treated.

Parents need to trust their instincts. If they feel something could be wrong other than just normal adolescent behavior changes, it is very important to address them. Speaking with a counselor or a therapist can be helpful. A full assessment can be done as well to determine if the child is suffering from symptoms that indicate depression.

Once the diagnosis has been done, an intervention plan has to be put into place. This involves the counselor or therapist, the parents, and the school. The child will need plenty of support from all of these various areas. Sometimes therapy alone will be sufficient to treat the depression. However, it is possible that various medications will have to be introduced as well.
