Food Addictions
Addictions come in many different forms, and one of them is food. We have all heard of eating disorders where people don’t eat or the throw up after eating. However, a person can have a food addiction where they continue to overindulge in various types of foods. This is often to fill a void in their life. They may have relationships that are failing or a job they aren’t happy with. They find comfort in the food and so they continue to consume it.
Food addictions are often the result of behaviors that a person has. Over time, they become so normal that they may not even realize it. The brain has a way of rationalizing what is working for us. This is a type of coping mechanism that we use in order to get through the day. Most people with a food addiction are very ashamed of it though and they hide it. The overeating they do takes place when they are alone.
Compulsive eaters often do it so they don’t have to think about other issues in their life. They don’t want to have to focus on how unhappy they are. Food may be the one thing in their day they have to look forward to. Also, with a food addiction a person doesn’t think it is as bad as taking drugs or consuming alcohol. They are able to continue working and doing other activities.
A food addiction affects the mental well being of someone though. It is often linked to depression. A person may continue to feel like they aren’t satisfied. As a result they continue to eat more and more. This is necessary for them to feel content for even a little while. When they come down from it they often feel guilty, but then the entire cycle starts all over again.
In order for a person to recover from a food addiction, they often need to seek professional help. Therapy can help a person figure out what the real issues are that they are covering up with food. Sometimes they know what they are but have chosen not to deal with them. Other times they are something that isn’t so easily identified.
Finding other things to do when the urge to eat obsessively comes on is very important. This is known as behavior modification. It helps the person to make permanent changes to their behaviors. It also helps to work with a dietician so that you can plan healthy meals for you and your family.
