Acid Rain Pollution
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) stepped in, attempting to make changes to current regulations to resolve the issues. Three environmentalists made national headlines when they climbed to the top of a smoke stack to draw attention to the negligence of factory owners in making the necessary changes.
Canada has a higher level of acid rain than most areas. The climate, the taraine, and the amount of exhaust from vehicles makes for a deadly combination of acid rain. Their forests are showing the effects of the pollutants. Both the vegetation and the forest area have been damaged. Wildlife and plants are failing to survive in the areas.
With so much conflict among nations, reducing acid rain pollution seems to be one area where everyone is in agreement. In 1984, Prime Minister Brian Mulroney made a plea to the United States Congress to help reduce the emissions from industries throughout the nation. The Unites States and Canada continued to work together in a joint venture effort. In 1991, they both signed the Acid Rain Agreement. Both have agreed to accept responsibility for the global issue and continue to fight it.
Acid rain pollution is an issue that affects every one of us. It affects our land, or food, the future for our children, and our rights as citizens. As new laws go into affects to prevent acid rain, it will cost each of us more to get these programs in the works. It is hoped that the long term affects will be beneficial enough to justify the cost.
